Montréal ‘’ la Ronde ‘’ 1967 - ?

Expo '67 and beyond

In 1967, Canada purchases the carousel in the United States for $75,000 American. The gallopers is one of the big stars of La Ronde, the amusement park of the World's Fair of Montreal (Expo '67). La Ronde is on one of the islands of the river Laurent which crosses Montreal.

Re-established under the name of antique carousel in Montreal, the gallopers are especially known in Belgium and particularly in the region Verviétoise under the name of "Poleur" because the ancestor of the carousel of this type belonged to Mister Adrien Poleur who lived in Amay. In the region of Liège, we nicknamed it gladly " the turnstile of Bairolle "

After the World's Fair of Montreal, the carousel disappears again to reappear 3 years later. Hardly damaged, it was completely restored, renewed and repainted, The cost of these works is estimated at $250,000 Canadian (223,000 €). Joseph Bairolle was sought to realize the painting works but he declined the offer. Finally in 1999, the original mechanism that mechanically reads the organ music was replaced by electronic infrared readers, which insure a much longer life, without modifying the tone of the organ.

On Saturday, May 3rd, 2003 we received Richard Concepcion's alarming information, member of the national association of the merry-go-round and park history, relative to the galloping. The galloping has been removed from the park of La Ronde and would be replaced by "Change-Morgan" in fiberglass.

We contact ed La Ronde at once to have the confirmation of this information. This one is exact, Six Flags, new owner of the park, removed the antique merry-go-round in autumn, 2002 to restore it according to the rule book. The merry-go-round will return to Montreal after renovation,

La Ronde/parc des Îles
This is a group of islands in the middle of the St Lawrence River. Many of the pavillions at the 1967 World Exposition (one of the most memorable and successful ever) were here, and the site has been preserved and developed. La Ronde holds many festivals and cultural events and has a large amusement park with some thrilling rides. On the islands there are also several museums, restaurants and the Montréal Casino.
