The Bairolle-Belgique Carousel, c.1885

openpic.JPG (54304 bytes)

Many think that it disappeared. Nevertheless one of the oldest galloping merry-go-round of the world ( 1885 ) still turns. It has given a lot of pleasure to numerous generations in Belgium, before being bought by the Americans, in 1964, to decorate the Belgian Village of the 1964 - 1965 New York World's Fair. Then, it disappears. In 1967, we find it, it is one of the favorite attractions of the guests of " La Ronde ", the park of amusement of the World Fair of Montreal (Expo '67) situated on an island of the St. Lawrence River which crosses the city.

Many a time restored, renewed, repainted, it reappears every time and continues to turn to the big enjoyment of the numerous tourists. In autumn, 2002, it disappears again. Six Flags, the new owner of the park removed it from the park to restore it according to the rule book, but will return to La Ronde.

Our galloping carousel belongs now to the world patrimony as an inestimable work of art.
